Who qualifies and how to get started

Housing Support is a Minnesota program run through counties and Tribal nations. Our team helps you check eligibility and apply.

Who Housing Support is for

  • Minnesotans aged 65 or older who need support to keep living in the community
  • Adults aged 18 to 64 who are blind or have a disability
  • People with low income who meet the program’s income and asset limits (people who receive SSI or General Assistance often qualify)
  • People who are experiencing housing instability

How to get started

  1. Accessing Housing Support

To get started, individuals experiencing homelessness should contact their local Coordinated Entry access point to complete a housing assessment, which helps identify their needs and determine eligibility for housing referrals.

  2. After Referral to MySkye Care

We talk through your eligibility, income, current housing and needs. If eligible, we will work to identify affordable and secure housing in Hennepin County.

  3. Apply with your county

Once housing is identified, applications go through MNbenefits or your county or Tribal human services office. We help you complete it.

  4. Stay housed with ongoing support

Once approved, Housing Support helps cover room and board, and, if eligible, our team provides case management so your housing stays stable.

Housing Support FAQ

Common questions about Minnesota Housing Support. Have another question? Call 612-472-1001.

Yes. Minnesota renamed Group Residential Housing (GRH) to Housing Support on July 1, 2017. The program is the same, so you may still hear both names.

Housing Support payments are made directly to the housing provider to cover room and board, such as rent, utilities, food and household supplies, rather than paid to the person.

No. People who receive SSI or General Assistance often qualify automatically, but others can qualify if their income and assets are within the program limits. Limits change each year, and your county makes the final decision.

You need a referral to a qualified and contracted housing provider. You can then apply online through MNbenefits or through your county or Tribal human services office with your referred provider.

Many people combine Housing Support with other services, such as Individualized Home Supports. Your case manager can tell you which services apply to you.

Yes. Waiver Case managers, social workers and families can use our referral form or call 612-472-1001. Please note majority of MySkye Care’s housing support placements are prioritized with the Coordinated Entry System referrals.
