Housing Support (Formerly GRH)
Who qualifies, what the program pays for and how to apply, explained in plain language.
Housing Support helps people with low income pay for a safe, stable place to live. If you have heard of GRH or Group Residential Housing, it is the same program under its new name. This guide covers who qualifies, what the program pays for, and how to apply.
What is Housing Support?
Housing Support is a state-funded grant that helps pay for housing for people who are long-term homeless and at risk of homelessness. It is run by counties and Tribal nations.
Who qualifies for Housing Support?
In general, a person must live in Minnesota and fall into one of these groups:
- Age 65 or older and in need of support to live in the community
- Age 18 to 64 and blind or living with a disability
- At risk of homelessness or institutional placement, as determined by the county
- Long-Term Homeless for 12 consecutive months or 4x in 3 years.
The person must also meet income and asset limits. People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or General Assistance (GA) often qualify automatically. Others can still qualify if their income is below the program limit. The dollar limits change every year, so the county makes the final decision.
What does Housing Support pay for?
Housing Support helps pay for room and board, which can include:
- Rent
- Utilities
- Food
- Household supplies
Payments are generally made directly to the housing provider rather than to the person. In some settings, the program can also pay for supplementary services, which are extra supports that help the person live successfully in that setting.
How to apply for Housing Support
At MySkye Care, referrals for our Housing Support program are received through Coordinated Entry, a system that connects individuals experiencing homelessness with available housing opportunities and supportive services.
Once a referral is received, our team will reach out to begin the intake process. During intake, we review the individual’s housing needs, circumstances, and required documentation to help determine eligibility for Housing Support.
Our team works collaboratively with individuals, referral partners, and county representatives to complete the necessary steps for enrollment and determine whether our program is an appropriate fit.
Interested in Housing Support?
If you are experiencing homelessness and need housing assistance, your first step is to connect with your local Coordinated Entry system for an assessment and referral. Referrals are based on eligibility, assessed needs, and program availability.
Housing Support and other services
Many people combine Housing Support with other services that help them live independently, such as Individualized Home Supports with Training or 24 Hour Emergency Assistance. A case manager can explain which services apply to your situation.
How MySkye Care can help
Our team helps people understand Housing Support, check their eligibility and work through the application upon referral from the Coordinated Entry System.
